Temur Chkheidze

Stage director

People´s Artist of Georgia. He was born on November 18, 1943, in Tbilisi. In 1965 he graduated from the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film Georgia State University, workshop of D. Aleksidze.

Director: Municipal Zugdidi Drama Theatre (1965–67); Georgia’s Young Spectators’ Theatre, Tbilisi (1967–70); Tbilisi Academic Rustaveli Theatre (1970–80). Artistic director: Academic Marjanishvili Theatre in Tbilisi (1980-91). While working in theatre, he also taught at the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film Georgia State University and, from 1978, he directed Georgian Television Theatre for 12 years.

He has staged over 70 productions including: Kldiashvili’s The Stepmother of Samanishvili (co-directed with Robert Sturua, 1969); Dadiani’s People of Yesterday (1972); Lorca’s La Casa de Bernarda Alba (1974); Sophocles’s Oedipus Rex at the Rustaveli Theatre (1976); Shakespeare’s Othello (1982); The Collapse, after Javakhishvili, at the Chekhov Mkhat and the Marjanishvili Theatre (1982, 1984); Kiacheli’s Haki Adzba at the Marjanishvili Theatre (1981); Anouilh’s Antigone at the Chekhov Mkhat (2001). At the Mariinsky Theatre he has staged: Prokofiev’s The Gambler (awarded Russia´s Golden Mask theatre prize in the category Best oOpera Production, 1997); Verdi’s Don Carlos (1998); Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer (1998); Rakhmaninov’s, The Miserly Knight; and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri (1999). At the Bolshoi Theatre he has staged: Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (2004). At La Scala, Milan and the Metropolitan Opera, New York he has staged Prokofiev’s The Gambler(1991, 2001) and in Paris and Bordeaux he has directed Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar´s Bride (2004). He appeared in the films Living Legends (1977) and Earth, This is Your Son (1980). Bolshoi Tovstonogov Drama Theatre (director, 1991-2004; principal director, 2004-07; appointed artistic director in 2007).
