Nikoloz (Nika) Agiashvili

Georgian writer, translator, journalist

He was born on September 1, 1903, in the village of Dikhashkho (now Vani municipality).

In 1924 he graduated from Kutaisi Humanitarian Technical College (former classical gymnasium). He continued his studies at the Department of Journalism of Tbilisi State University (TSU) in 1928. He has worked for various newspapers and magazines, namely: Young Communist; New Kutaisi; Our Generation; Communist; and Flag.

Nika worked for many years as editor-in-chief for the publishing house Merani. He actively participated in the publication of the Kutaisi literary newspaper Word and Business (1934 – 1935). He began his literary work in 1925, during his time as a university student. In that year his letters and translations were published.

He is esteemed as a translator and literary stylist. He has translated works by Jack London, Lev Tolstoy, Maxim Gorky, Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, among others.

Nika passed away on November 22, 1984. He is buried in the Didube Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures in Tbilisi.
